Antibiotics Flashcards
Antibiotics are used to treat
Acute infections
Chronic infections
Infections such as periodontitis
For prophylaxis such as patients -
Skull fractures
Immunocompromised hosts
Radiotherapy recipients
Patients with protheses (hip)
Antibiotic + Microbe
Eukaryotes-
Fumagillin- Aspergillus fumigatus
Penicillin- Penicillium notatum
Prokaryote-
Nystatin- Streptomyces noursei
How do antibiotics work?
Inhibition of cell wall synthesis- penicillin.
Inhibition of protein synthesis-tetracycline.
Inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis- quinolones.
Disruption of cell membrane function- polymyxin.
Antifungal medication
Polyenes- Causes plasma membrane to leak ions.
Oral candidosis medication
Fluconazole capsule
Issues are that it could cause fluconazole resistance.
Antibiotics name and mechanism of action
Penicillin and Bacitracin- Inhibits cell wall synthesis
Macrolides- Inhibits protein synthesis
Rifamycin- Inhibits RNA synthesis
Antibiotic side effects:
Beta-lactams
Tetracycline
Rifampin
Beta-lactams- Allergy (hives)
Tetracycline- Brown/ yellow teeth staining.
Rifampin- Red man syndrome
What are antibiotics
Antibiotics are a chemical substance that kill or inhibits the growth of bacteria.
