Cranial nerves 2 Flashcards
Ophthalmic nerve, Maxillary, Mandibular- sensory or motor- somatic or autonomic?
Ophthalmic nerve- mostly sensory.
Maxillary- mostly Sensory
Mandibular- Sensory and Motor (somatic)
Maxillary nerve has sensory fibres to…
Maxilla and overlying skin.
Maxillary sinuses.
Nasal cavity.
Palate
Nasopharynx
Maxillary teeth
Portion of the dura mater
Motor component of the maxillary division is to the
lacrimal gland
Zygomatic nerve
-Sensory.
-Formed by zygomaticofacial (skin of the cheek) and zygomaticotemporal (skin of the temporal).
-Conveys postganglionic parasympathetic fibres to the lacrimal nerve.
Infraorbital nerve
-Sensory
-Merger of cutaneous branches from upper lip, medial portion of cheek, lower eyelid and side of nose.
Nasopalatine nerve
-Sensory nerve for the anterior hard palate, tissues around maxillary anterior teeth, tissues around nasal septum.
Greater palatine nerve
Sensory nerve of the posterior hard palate and posterior lingual gingiva
Lesser palatine nerve
Sensory nerve for the soft palate and palatine tonsils
Anterior Superior Alveolar nerve
Sensory nerve of sensation and pain for central & lateral incisors and canines.
Middle superior alveolar nerve
Sensory nerves of sensation and pain of upper pre-molar and mesiobuccal root of the upper first molar.
Sinus mucosa and periodontium and buccal gingiva.
Posterior superior alveolar nerve
Sensory nerves of sensation of upper 2nd and 3rd molars and 2/3 roots of the 1st molar.
Trigeminal condition
Trigeminal neuralgia, nerve pain due to compression or inflammation or degeneration.
Treated by- botox, laser surgery, radiation therapy or alcohol injections.
PATHWAY OF FACIAL NERVE PICTURE
Originates from the PONS-MEDULLA junction in the brainstem.
Passes through the INTERNAL ACOUSTIC MEATUS to leave the cranial cavity.
Goes through the FACIAL CANAL in the temporal bone.
Exits skull through the STYLOMASTOID FORAMEN.
Five motor branches to the muscles of the facial expression
Temporalis branch- Superior orbicularis oculi
Zygomatic branch- Inferior zygomatic major
Buccal branch- Buccinator
Mandibular branch- Mentalis
Cervical branch- Platysma
Bells Palsy
Idiopathic facial paralysis.
Due to inflammation or viral infection.
Treated by anti-inflammatory corticosteroids, antiviral drugs or physical therapy.
