Mood stabilizing Drugs
Lithium carbonate and lithium citrate maintence serum levels 0.6-1.2mEG/L acute mania - 1-1.5 toxicity -1.5-2.5 sodium levels need to be 135-145mEQ/L most serious AE is cardiac dysrhythmia
Antidepressant Drugs
TCAs (tricyclic antidpress) , MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors), 2nd gen anitdepress - SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), SNRIs
TCAs - second line
lethal 70-80% overdose die due to seizures or dsyrhythmias & no antidote
Serotonin Syndrome
builds up too much serotonin (happiness)
Citalopram (Celexa)
SSRI
Duloxetine (Cymbalta)
can worse glaucoma
can use for depression or diabetic neuropathy
Fluoxetine (Prozac)
SSRI
Antipsychotics
block dopamine in brain
positive and negative symptoms - expressed or not
Haloperidol (Haldol)
antipsychotic - long term psychosis
Risperidone (Risperdal)
Antipsychotic - schizophrenia
Benzodiazepines
antianxiety drug
sedating, acts immed, schedule 4,
antidote; Flumazenil (Romazicon)
Alprazolam (Xanax)
short term antianxiety
all interact with contraceptives and alcohol
Diazepam (Valium)
short term antianxiety, also used to stop continual seizures
Lorazepam (Ativan)
short term antianxiety
Buspirone (BuSpar)
long term antiaxiety and nosedating
