psychosocial lecture 3 Flashcards
john bowlby
attachment theory
stages of separation anxiety
- protest
- despair
- detachment: disengages
2 themes of attachment theory
- responsive parents create safe haven and secure base for kid
- kid develops internal working model of relationships based on relationships with mom
secure
use mom as secure base for exploration of the toys when moms in the room
-happily greet on return
-easily soothed by stranger
insecure-anxious/ ambivalent
cling to mom when in the room and neglect toys
-upset when mom leaves/ difficult to sooth on return
insecure-avoidant
indifferent to mom both when she’s in the lab and returns despite showing psychological sings of distress
bowlby’s two internal working models attitudes
- self-esteem
- interpersonal trust: learn that others are trustworthy or reasonable or not
Bowlbys 4 attatchments
- positive self-positive others: secure
- positive self- negative others: dismissive avoidant
- negative self-positive others: preoccupied
- negative self-negative others: fearful-avoidant
positive self-positive others
express trust in relationships, expect conflict to have constructive outcomes, attribute less hostile intent to others
positive self-negative others
avoid relationships, see themselves as self-sufficient, perceive high consensus for their own opinion
negative self-positive others
extreme distress to the possibility of rejection, higher chance of depression, both idealized and vilify the partner
negative self- negative others
become hostile and angry without realizing it, negative interpersonal relationships, feelings of jealousy, habitual use of alcohol to reduce social anxiety
study 1: measured adult attachments using experience in close relationship inventory with attachment to god
results:
anxiety-anxious god attachment; avoidance = avoidant god attachment
anxious-avoidant =less loving god
study 2: primed lexical decision task: following prime
-subliminal prime/distress conditions
- words were either neutral or god related
results:
attachment avoidance was related to god
study 3: use (LDT) with positive words
results:
especially religious avoidant individuals responded to implicit the God prime with increased access to negative, controlling words
