Experimented with an 11 month old boy ‘little Albert’ producing a fear of a white rabbit by associating it with a loud scary noise
Watson and Rayner (1920)
Showed that monkeys could develop a snake phobia by simply observing another monkey being fearful in the presence of a snake
Mineka et al (1984)
Little Peter fear of white rabbit which then developed into a fear of fur and other stimuli - 16 graduated steps and pleasant stimulus

It is the exposure to feared stimulus not pairing of pleasant stimulus that is the most effective method of SD design of study makes it impossible to detect which had the greatest effect

Carried out an experiment which demonstrated flooding - took a girl who was scared of cars and drove her around for hours initially the girl was hysterical but eventually calmed down when she realised her situation was safe

Concluded that flooding was significantly more effective at tackling phobias than SD but patients found it traumatic so did not return/ walked out
Chow 2006
Evaluated an adversion therapy programme over 4 chemical dependency units and found significant success in treating cocaine, marihuana and alcohol dependencies eg they found that 81% of alcohol abusers abstained at 6 months following treatment with 71.3% still abstinent at 20 months
