46 patients with major depression were randomly allocated toe tither ECT or a control condition (exposure to powerful magnetic fields, which are also believed to benifit depressed patients) Depression was assessed immediadetly after one month and after 6 months.
Findings- 59% of the ECT patients went into remission, experiencing no symptoms immediately after treatment and at a one month follow up. Only 17% of the control group experienced similar remission0
- at a 6 month follow up most patients were suffering major depression again

Has criticised the therapeutic relationship in psychoanaylsis as one where all the power lied with the analyst. The therapist may abuse their power. The client is expected to accept the view of themselves as prescribed by the analyst.
