Psychology Approches Flashcards
Approaches
Why do Behaviourist believe that Psychology should be a science ?
They believe that Psychology should be a science, as they believed theories needed to be supported by empirical data. So they used lab experiments for their research in controlled conditions.
What is one assumption in the Behaviourism approach ?
Behaviourist believe that their is no difference between the learning processes of a human and animal so therefore in this approach animals are used in experiment instead of humans.
What is another assumption of the Behaviourism approach ?
Is the belief that everyone when they are 1st born are Tabula Rasa meaning that everyone is born a black slate and that all behaviour is learnt.
What is the final assumptions of Behaviourisms ?
-Environmental determinism meaning their is no free will
-As well as all behaviour is learnt through classical and operant conditioning.
What is a Neutral Stimulus ?
A Neutral stimulus is an event that doesn’t produce a response.
What is a Unconditioned stimulus ?
Unconditioned stimulus is the innate [reflexive] response to a stimulus that has not been conditioned.
What is a Conditioned Stimulus ?
Conditioned Stimulus is the stimulus which, after repeated pairings with the unconditioned stimulus produces the response.
What is a Unconditioned Response ?
Unconditioned Response is a stimulus that causes the reflex response before conditioning. It’s the stimulus that naturally produces the response.
What is Conditioned Response ?
Conditioned Response is the reflexive response that occurs after exposure to the conditioned stimulus.

What happened in Pavlov Dog ?
Neutral stimulus, Unconditioned stimulus, Conditioned stimulus, Unconditioned response, Conditioned response.
What is Classical Conditioning
Classical Conditioning is learning through association when a new stimulus is paired with an unconditioned stimulus to create an new stimulus response.
What is Stimulus generalisation ?
Stimulus generalisation is when a conditioned response is elicited to similar stimulus . For example a phobia to rats what can lead to a fear of hamsters due to them sharing similar tails.
What is Extinction ?
Extinction is the gradual weakening of a conditioned response that results in the behaviour decreasing or disappearing.
