What is the nature and nurture debate ?
The nature and nurture debate is about whether psychological characteristics such as behavioural tendencies, personality traits and mental abilities are also “wired in” before a child is born or whether they are influenced by their environment.
What was Bowlby’s theory of attachment ?
Bowlby’s theory of attachment are a biological perspective of development [nature] what explains the bond between the mother and child as well as being an innate process. As well as this Chomsky presented a similar idea of language being developed through a innate language acquisition device what also comes fro a biological perspective.
What was Bandura social learning theory ?
Bandura social learning theory focuses on the environmental influences children learn from including imitations and role models.
What is the nature perspective based off ?
Nature perspective is based off on a assumption that all individuals have an inner “biological clock” that determines when and at what rate physical development will progress.
What did Gesell maturation theory ?
Gesell maturation theory looks into children’s biological maturation in the 1940s-1950s.
What did Gesell develop ?
Gesell developed the “normative approach” by observing large numbers of children to find the skills and abilities that most children had in each age group.
What were Gesell’s findings ?
Gesell findings included:
- Identifying norm’s or milestones for each developmental aspect.
- A child moves through the sequence at their own pace.
- Development was predetermined and that the environment had a little influence.
- If a child experiences delayed development then the issue is one of heredity rather than the child’s envrionemnt.
What are milestones used for ?
Milestones are used to measure development and identify developmental delay.
Why do critics say about the usage of milestones ?
Critics state that the theory doesn’t take into consideration individual or cultural differences or children with learning difficulties.
