Biomedical vs biopsychosocial?
Biomedical is treated with pills. Biopsychosocial considers biological, psychological, and social factors and their complex interactions in understanding health, illness, and health care delivery.
What are anxiety disorders?
1) Excessive fear
2) Avoidance behavior
3) Sympathetic activation in the absence of threat
What are some specific diagnoses of anxiety disorders?
1) Phobias (no immediate danger)
2) Generalized anxiety disorders (without specific cause)
3) Panic disorder (panic attacks)
4) Social anxiety disorder (does not want to be around social gatherings)
What is conditional positive regard?
Giving or holding love depending on different conditions. Leads to a person from being self-actualized
What is client-centered therapy?
non-directive form of talk therapy that was developed by humanist psychologist
What is depressive disorder?
Feeling sad, empty and/or irritable mood
What is major depressive disorder?
6 weeks of sadness, irritable mood, feeling worthless, impaired concentration, insomnia, loss of interest, recurring thoughts of death or suicide, significant weight gain or loss.
What is SSRI?
serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Allows for decrease in depletion of serotonin
What is monoamine hypothesis?
Predicts the underlying pathophysoiologic basis of depression is a depletion in the levels of serotonin, norepinephrine and/or dopamine
What are bipolar disorders?
cycles of happiness and sadness
What are the two specific diagnoses of bipolar?
Bipolar I = manic-depressive
Bipolar II = Cyclothymic disorder (moods swing between short periods of mild depression and elevated mood.
What is psychodynamic psychotherapy?
It includes hypnosis therapy, dream analysis and analysis of childhood. (Freudian thought)
What is schizophrenia?
It includes delusion, hallucinations, disorganized speech and thoughts
What is cognitive behavioral therapy?
Reinforcement of more adaptive thoughts, teaching how to sooth oneself
What are personality disorders?
Lifetime pattern of socially deviant feelings and behaviors
