Protist (Ch.24) Flashcards
1
Q
what are some characteristics of protist?
A
- heterogenous
- microscopic
- most are unicellular (some are multicellular and large)
- most are aquatic
- membrane bound nucleus
- multiple linear chromosomes
- some have mitochondria and chloroplast
- have microtubules and microfilaments that help provide motility and cytoskeletal support
- share characteristics of transcription and translation with other eukaryotes
2
Q
Protist
A
eukaryotic organism that. is not an animal, plant or fungus
3
Q
How does protist differ from fungi?
A
- most protist are motile (have motile stages)
- cell walls made up of cellulose NOT chitin
4
Q
How does photosynthesizing protist differ from plants?
A
- photoautotrophs can also be heterotrophs and some regularly combine both modes of nutrition
- DO NOT retain developing embryos inside of parental tissue
DO NOT have highly differentiated structures equivalent to roots, stems and leaves - sometimes referred to as algae
5
Q
How does protist differ from animals?
A
- protist lack features that characterize many animals
ie. nerve cells, highly differentiated structures - limbs, heart and collagen, an extracellular support chain
