Protection Flashcards
What publication covers Protection?
ADP/ADRP 3-37
What is Protection?
The preservation of mission-related personnel, facilities, equipment, information, and infrastructure
“Protection is the preservation of the effectiveness and survivability of mission related military and non-military personnel, equipment, facilities, information, and infrastructure deployed or located within or outside the boundaries of a given operational area.”
What are the Protection principles?
Comprehensive, Integrated, Layered, Redundant, Enduring
pneumonic device: RELIC, as in a “preserved” item of value
What does it mean that Protection is comprehensive?
Protection should include all available protection tasks and systems.
“Protection is an all-inclusive utilization of complementary and reinforcing protection tasks and systems available to commanders that are incorporated into the plan to preserve the force.”
What are the primary Protection Tasks?
Just list a few. There are 16
Conduct Survivability Operations, Provide Force Health Protection, Conduct CBRN Operations, Provide EOD Support, Coordinate Air and Missile Defense Support, Conduct Personnel Recovery, Conduct Detention Operations, Conduct Risk Management, Implement Physical Security Procedures, Apply Antiterrorism Measures, Conduct Police Operations, Conduct Populace and Resources Control, Conduct Area Security, Perform Cyberspace Security and Defense, Conduct Electromagnetic Protection, Implement Operations Security
What does “Protection is integrated” mean?
Protection is connected with the other aspects of Unified Land Operations to support the overall effort.
“Protection is integrated with other activities, systems, efforts and capabilities associated with unified land operations to provide strength and structure to the overall effort. Integration must occur vertically and laterally throughout the operations process.”
What does it mean to say that “Protection is layered”?
“Protection capabilities are deliberately sequenced across multiple domains to eliminate, mitigate, or assume the risk of threat effects.”
Explain how protection is redundant.
“Protection efforts for identified critical vulnerabilities require dedicated primary and alternate protection capabilities”
Explain the “enduring” principle of Protection.
Protection is a continuous activity. Commanders and leaders preserve combat power and reduce the risk of loss, damage, or injury to their formations.
What is the protection war fighting function?
“The protection tasks and systems that are synchronized and integrated throughout the operations process” “so that commanders can apply maximum combat power to accomplish the mission”.
How does planning relate to Protection?
Planning is the first step toward effective protection. Planning is an ongoing, continuous process throughout the Protection operation.
What is the focus of Protection during the Preparation phase?
Deterring and preventing the enemy from actions that would affect combat power or freedom of action.
What is assessment?
Assessment is essential ongoing activity of determining of the progress toward accomplishing a task, creating a condition, or achieving an objective (in other words, toward a desired end state).
When/why might the staff make adjustments to Protection during execution?
When variances from the scheme of maneuver and protection exceed a threshold value.
Why should leaders be selective about applying protection measures during offense?
Protection is applied carefully and selectively to ensure that it does not have a debilitating effect on a commander’s freedom of action
