What is tactics?
“Tactics is the employment, ordered arrangement, and directed actions of forces in relation to each other.”
Selection of tactics uses creativity and supports the attainment of goals.
What is the tactical level of war.
The level at which battles and engagements are planned and executed (to achieve military objectives assigned to tactical units or task forces.
How to the strategic and operation levels of war relate to the tactical level of war?
They provide context for the tactical level of war.
Describe an engagement.
A tactical conflict between lower echelon (brigade and smaller) maneuver forces executed in terms of minutes to days.
Describe a battle.
A series of related engagements that occur when a division, corps, or army fights for an objective. Battles determine tactical, strategic, and operation success and can affect the course of a campaign.
What is the art of tactics?
Three interrelated aspects:
“the creative and flexible array of means to accomplish missions,
decision making under conditions of uncertainty when faced with a thinking and adaptive enemy,
and the understanding of the effects of combat on Soldiers”
-relies on intuition
What is the science of tactics?
“The understanding of those military aspects of tactics—capabilities, techniques, and procedures—that can be measured and codified.”
What is the difference between a hasty and a deliberate operation?
A hasty operation prioritizes speed and uses readily available resources, FRAGO, and mental synchronization to perform without planning and preparation. A deliberate operation allows time for planning and coordination, and task organization.
What results in success in tactical problem solving?
the aggressive, intelligent, and decisive use of relative combat power
