What is prostatitis?
Inflammation or infection of the prostate
Symptoms of prostatitis
Painful, frequent, difficult urination, dribbling
Sn/Sx of acute prostatitis
sudden high fever, chills, and severe distending pain in lumbosacral region, RN 1
Sn/Sx of chronic prostatitis
Repeated attack, difficult urination, burning sensation, turbid urine, bearing down sensation around the low abdomen or lumbosacral region, pain and aching in RN1 or scrotal region, may develop pain during ejaculation or impotence
What are the common causes of prostatitis?
1) Food, too much alcohol,
2) Excessive sexual activity
3) Suppression of ejaculation
4) External trauma of RN 1 area
5) Common cold EPF invasion
What TCM categories would prostatitis fall into?
Lin syndrome or Long Bi
What are the most common patterns of prostatitis?
Excess: Accumulation of heat in the LJ
Deficiency: KI Yang Qi Xu
How is prostatitis diagnosed?
1) Palpation or tests to see if prostate is enlarged
2) PSA prostate specific agent, if elevated may suspect cancer
What are the common points for prostatitis?
SP6 – tonify yin, remove damp function SP9 – remove damp UB28 – back shu of UB RN3/4 – Front mu of UB and Front mu of SI (Deficiency use 4, excess case use 3) UB22 – SJ back shu water passage

Education
1) Encourage patient to drink lots of water to flush the urine
2) Self massage in chronic case for 30 minutes
3) Hot water bath for 20 minutes every night
