How is hepatitis A transmitted?
Through food and water
How is hep B transmitted?
Through body fluid and blood
How is hep C transmitted?
Through blood
Incubation for HAV
15-50 days - causes jaundice
Incubation for HBV
45-180 days - can be a carrier
Incubation for HCV
14-182 days
What is the most serious of the three?
Hep C as there is not vaccine available.
How is Hep C treated?
Can use interferon but there are bad side effects.
What protein is found to determine if someone has a Hep B infection?
HbsAg
Of people infected with Hep C how many are cured? How many ill? How many long term infection leading to damage?
- 15-20%
- 60%
- 20-25%
What are the symptoms of infection?
- Fever
- Tiredness
- Jaundice (not common, only in severe cases)
- Loss of appetite
- Abdominal cramps
- Nausea
- Dark urine
What tests determine liver function?
ALT (alanine aminotransferase) and AST (aspartate aminotransferase)
Levels should be less than 40
What is the most common TCM pattern for hepatitis?
Retention of D-H in the MJ
What are the other patterns?
- Disharmony between LV and SP
- SP and KI Yang Xu
- LV and KI Yin Xu
- Blood stasis
(Toxic heat, LV overacting on SP)

Soothe LV, regulate qi, clear damp-heat
