Lin Syndrome Flashcards
What is Lin syndrome?
A condition of urinary dysfunction characterized by frequency, scanty urine, pain, urgency and difficulty. Often combined with distention pain in the low abdomen. Sometimes the pain radiates to the lumbar region or groin.
What does Lin Syndrome correspond to in terms of Western diseases?
UTI, cystitis (infection of bladder), urethritis, pyelonephritis (kidney and bladder infection), kidney stones, UT tumour, blockage, necrosis, chyluria (lymph liquid)
What are the two main categories of Lin syndrome?
- Upward pathway - infection starts below and progresses upward, 80-90% are E.coli
- Downward pathway - usually from the blood, bacteria travel in bloodstream and get trapped in the kidney
What are the 6 classifications of Lin syndrome?
- Heat
- Qi
- Blood (xue)
- Shi
- Gao
- Lao
Heat symptoms
Burning sensation
Qi symptoms
Distention in low abdomen, unsmooth discharge
Blood
See blood in urine
Shi
Stones or even sand in urine
Gao
Urine is thick and cloudy, milky, maybe chyluria
Lao
Chronic, repeated attack, triggered by overwork
What is the chief pathology of lin syndrome?
Damp heat in the LJ
What are the primary organs?
Kidney and UB. Next most important are LU and SP. LV, HT and SJ also involved.
What are the two major differences between Long Bi and Lin syndrome?
1) Look at the total volume of the urine during the day, Long bi is significantly decreased while Lin syndrome is still normal. Less than 100ml is a serious problem because toxins will not come out.
2) Urgent and painful urination for Lin syndrome, with Long bi there is pain in low abdomen but not on urination
Pyelonephritis symptoms
Infection in the medulla. This is worse than a UTI as it could damage your kidney function. Infection in the renal cortex is just called nephritis. Tapping test. Check blood and urine.
Cystitis
Urgent, frequent painful urination, slight fever, chills, may have blood in the urine
Urethritis
Symptoms may be worse, more pain in low abdomen and on discharge, but the urine test may be normal
How do they diagnose a UTI?
Based on clinical evaluation, collect signs and symptoms then combine with lab test. Routine urine test or culture to let the bacteria grow. Most commonly it is E. coli. Use a cystogram to look inside and see what is going on.
Need to also be able to differentiate and diagnose kidney stones.
Chronic repeated attacks of lin syndrome will damage _______ qi and cause ____ and _____ deficiency
