After the incindent, she cannot hear, which Hosseini uses to highlight she can’t face the truth and reality about what’s happened to her family.

He begins acting kindly and sympatheitc towards Laila, which are two characteristics we woudln’t have previously associated with Rasheed due to his lack of caring towards Mariam.

Someone appears at the door wanting to speak to a resident at the address, which reminds the readers of the time Laila answered the door to the man who was here to see Mami and Babi to inform them that their two sons had been killed in war.
28- What integral piece of information is told to Laila and how does this affect her?
Laila is told that Tariq is dead, which overwhelmes her with grief, and relates to how Mami and Babi were feeling when they found out their sons had been killed in war
29- What change do we see in Rasheed and why?
Rasheed becomes caring and sympathetic towards Laila, which is a change of characteristics from how he acts towards Mariam, however, towards the middle’end of the chapter, Mariam realises that he is doing it to seduce Laila into marrying him.

Because she doesn’t want another woman suffering what she does
