21- Where does Babi take them, and how does Hosseini use the setting to reflect their sense of freedom?
They go to the Bamiyan valley, which has 2 buddha’s, and at this height overlooking a large expanse of Afghanistan, they feel free, however, Hosseini uses a hawk “gliding in circles” to reference the fact that wghilst they feel free and the ojutlook from up there is positive, they aren’t exactly free yet.
21- What do we learn about Babi’s plans for the future?
that he wants to leave Afghanistan and go anywhere first, then go to America, somewhere near the sea like California, and open a Afghan restaurant.
22- What happens at the beginning of the chapter?
We fast forward to January 1989, where she goes to watch the last of the Soviet army leave Kabul with her parents.
22-What atmosphere begins to shift around Laila’s and Tariq’s relationship?
they go to watch a movie, and both feel nervous when watching the kiss scene, which is the first time that we get an indication that they like each other
23- What events occur that shows the passing of time and change, but also how the furture may not be so positive?
Tariq’s father has a couple of stokes
Tariq outgrows his leg
Hassina is forced to marry a cousin

Najibullah surended to the Mujahideen
23- What are Mami’s views on Laila and Tariq’s friendship now that they are older?
she says a girl’s reputation is more delicate than a boys, and questions whether he has asked for her hand in marriage yet
23- What does Tariq say to Laila?
“That I only have eyes for you.”
24- How does Hosseini describe the landscape around Laila?
blasts are “blisfully elsewhere” creating a ‘every man for himself attitude and narrative in the community, “sudden white flashes” also shows like a warning sign, of an innocent live being took, which Hosseini uses to show the innocent people reciediving the bad end of the stick in this conflict.
24- What does Tariq buy?
A gun
24- When Babi aproaches Mami about the idea of moving, how does Mami react?
She says it’s going to be a betrayal, and stands her ground that she’s not leaving
24- What happens to Giti at the end of the chapter?
When she was walking home from school, a stray rocket hit her and killed her, and her mother ran up and down the streets collecting bits of her.

Tariq telling Laila he is leaving

Tariq and Laila having sex
25- what emotional scene takes place?
Tariq confesses her wants to marry Laila, and whilst she loves him and wants to get married to him too, but she can’t leave her dad, so she watches him go.
