Properties of Water Flashcards
High latent heat of the water in the body (2)
The energy required to change the state of a substance without increasing its temperature.
Latent heat energy from the body evaporates water from sweat and this cools the body.
High Specific Heat capacity (3)
A measure of the amount of energy required to change the temperature of a substance.
A lot of energy is required to heat water by just a small amount.
The human body contains a large amount of water and this helps maintain a constant body temperature.
High Surface Tension (3)
Surface water molecules are pulled inwards towards the body of the liquid because of these forces of attraction.
The surface tension of water is high because the water molecules are strongly attracted to each other by hydrogen bonds.
Surface tension can be destroyed by surfactants.
