Chemical Bonding and Compounds Flashcards
Elements combine to give compounds in order to achieve electron structure stability. This can be done in 2 ways
- Gaining or losing electrons to give ionic compounds with ionic bonds
- Sharing electrons to give covalent molecules with covalent bonds
Ions and ionic bonds
Ions are found in extracellular fluid and intracellular fluid in the body.
CATIONS and ANIONS
Cations
Are formed by losing electrons, are positively charged particles e.g. ca2+, Na+, K+… are metals
Anions
Are formed by gaining electrons, are negatively charged particles e.g. Cl-, HCO-. are non-metals
Ionic bonds
The force of attraction between an anion and cation.
