Nucleic Acids Flashcards
Nucleic Acids
organic molecules which were first found in the nucleus, but they are present throughout the cell. They are huge molecules made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus.
Two types of Nucleic acid
DNA
RNA (m,r,t)
Nucleotide
The basic unit of the nucleic acid molecule
Nucleotide smaller units (3)
Phosphate
sugar (Deoxyribose or ribose)
base
Nucleic Acid
Is a polymer (complex molecule), formed by a chain of repeating units called nucleotides.
DNA Structure
Double helix
phosphate
sugar (deoxyribose)
base
DNA nucleotide bases (4)
Adenine (A)
Thymine (T)
Cytosine (C)
Guanine (G)
Weak Hydrogen bonds hold together base pairs.
RNA Structure
only one strand
Phosphate
sugar (ribose)

RNA nucleotides bases
Adenine (A)
Uracil (U) replaces Thymine (T)
Cytosine (C)
Guanine (G)
Three types of RNA, which play a role in protein synthesis
mRNA
rRNA
tRNA
