Prokaryotic sex exchange Flashcards
Three mechanisms by which bacteria exchange genetic information
transformation
transduction
conjugation
auoxtrophy
inability of organism to synthesise specific organic molecule for its growth
it is ‘auxotrophic’ for that molecule
if an organism cannot produce a specific organic molecule for its growth, it is said to be
it is ‘auxotrophic’ for that molecule
Gene transfer agent
defective phages that package short segments of bacterial DNA and are used by bacteria to transfer bacterial genes
OriV
origin of plasmid vegetative replication
OriT
origin of transfer
What replication do we see from OriT
rolling circle replication
What replication do we see from OriV
bidirectional replication
sex pilus
hair like appendage on surface of bacteria and archaea that is used to pull two cells closer together for conjugation
Episome
a plasmid that can integrate into the chromosome
Hfr cell
a bacteria with a conjugative plasmad such as the F factor integrated into its chromosomal DNA
What are Hfr strains of bacteria?
a strain that has the F factor integrated into the genome meaning that during bacterial conjugation it attemps to transfer the F factor AND a small section of the chromosome
bacterial F factor
a plasmid encoding genes for bacterial conjugation sex pili. The F factor can be transferred from donor to recipient.
