Prokaryotic Cell Structure Flashcards
Capsule
Slime layer
Around cell wall
Enhances some bacteria to cause disease
Plasmid
Genes separate from chromosome
Carry antibiotic- resistant genes
Flagellum
Long whip like projections
Enable them to move
Ribosomes
Site of protein synthesis
Prokaryotes
Bacteria that are unicellular and do NOT have a nucleus
Pilus
Extension of plasma membrane, helps bacteria stick to a surface and also acts like a bridge where 2 bacteria can exchange DNA
Pili- plural
Plasma membrane
Surrounds cell and regulates what enters and leaves the cell
Cell wall
Surrounds the plasma membrane- gives the cell its shape and prevents water entering from bursting cell
Chromosome
Single DNA molecules not enclosed in nucleus (contains most of bacterias genes)
