Projectile motion Flashcards
What is the definition of projectile motion?
the motion of an object or the human body being projected into the air at an angle
What are the 3 factors that affect the displacement of a projectile (how far it travels?
- Velocity (the greater the velocity, the further it travels)
- Height of release (the higher the object is released the further it will go
- Angle of release (there is an OPTIMAL angle for release
What two factors affect the angle of release?
1) Height of release
2) Landing height
What is the optimal angle for Long jump, Shot putt and a basketball free throw?
Long jump = 45
BBFT = >45
Shot put =
What are the 2 types of flight paths?
1) Parabolic (symmetrical)
2) Distorted parabolic (asymmetrical)
What factors affect an object having a distorted or parabolic flight path?
If the object is largely affected by AR then it will have a distorted flight path. Objects with a large weights aren’t affected by AR and so will have a parabolic flight path
Explain the flight path of a shot putt…
- Because the object has high weight, AR doesn’t need to be considered due to its large mass/inertia
- It will enter a state of momentum (momentum is constant) until an external force is applied upon it
- Therefore it has a parabolic flight path
- The height of release must be less than 45
- The vertical components (action force) turns into horizontal components due to gravity
