Angular momentum Flashcards
1
Q
What is the definition of angular momentum, moment of inertia and angular velocity?
What is the equation?
A
Angular momentum = an object’s motion around an axis
Moment of inertia = the resistance of an object to change its state when rotating
Angular velocity = the rate of movement in rotation
Angular momentum = Angular momentum x moment of inertia
2
Q
What is the relationship between mom of inertia and angular vel?
A
They are inversely proportional so as one increases the other decreases
3
Q
Explain the details of moment of inertia…
A
- Depends on the mass of the object and the distribution of the mass around the axis
- since mass is constant the distribution is the only things that can change the mom of in
- The closer the mass is to its axis of rotation, the easier to turn so the moment of inertia is low (low resistance)
- Increasing the distance of distribution of mass from the axis, will increase the resistance (moment of inertia) and decrease angular velocity
- ANGULAR MOMENTUM IS CONSTANT!
