Impulse Flashcards
1
Q
What is the definition of impulse?
A
The length of time a force is applied to an object
2
Q
What is the equation for impulse?
A
Impulse = force x time
3
Q
What are the details of impulse?
A
- Impulse is equal to a change of momentum (acceleration/deceleration acts on it)
- Positive impulse = if an individual or object is accelerated
- Negative impulse = if an individual or object is decelerated
- The longer the force is in contact (large impulse), the greater the acceleration or deceleration
4
Q
Give 2 examples of positive and negative impulse..
A
Positive = push pass in hockey, Discus spin Negative = Catching a ball in cricket, tackle in rugby
5
Q
Explain impulse and sprinting..
A
- Positive impulse is gained through ground-reaction force
- Negative impulse is gained through footfall
- If the GRF is larger than FF then the runner will accelerate
- If they are the same than the runner will be constant and will have a net impulse of zero
