Periodisation of Training Flashcards
What is the definition of periodisation?
How an athletes splits up their training within their year to reach peak performance prior to training
What are the 3 main stages and sub stages of periodisation?
1) Preparation
- General conditioning
- Competition specific training
2) The competition period
- Pre-competition
- competition
- Tapering (Peak)
3) Transition period
- Recovery
Explain the preparation phase…
- General conditioning (general fitness work, strength and conditioning to build muscle mass)
- Competition specific training (speed, strength, skills and technique, training intensity increases)
Explain the Competition phase…
- Pre-comp - lots of fine tuning, friendlies, training is comp specific eg corners/free kicks, training is reduced
- Competition - occur every week eg fixtures, leagues in full flow
- Tapering - focus on comp eg champs final
Explain the transition phase…
- recovery from training and comp
- fun and relaxed
- keep motivated by doing different sports
- set goals
Explain the difference between macro, meso and micro cycles
- Macro = long term performance goal eg Olympics 4 yrs
- Meso = short term goals within macro (2-8 weeks focusing on improving specific eg take off in long jump
- Micro = 1 week of training programme (including rest days)
What is a training unit?
An individual training session
What is double periodisation?
Where an athlete peaks more than once in their macrocycle eg Olympics and world champ
