Projectile motion Flashcards
What is projectile motion?
The motion of an object or the human body in the air
What are the factors that determine the horizontal displacement of an object?
Velocity of release, height of release, and angle of release
How does the velocity of release affect how far an object travels?
The greater the velocity of an object the further it will go
How does the height of release affect how far an object travels?
The greater the height of release of an object the further it will go
How does the angle of release affect how far an object travels?
There is always an optimal angle of release
As there is an optimal angle, what happens as the angle increases?
Displacement will not increase as the angle increases - unlike velocity and height
When considering the angle of release, what are 2 things to consider?
Height of release and landing height
What is the optimal angle of release for long jump?
45 degrees
What is the relationship between release height and landing height for long jump?
Release height = landing height
What is the optimal angle of release for shotput?
Less than 45 degrees
What is the relationship between release height and landing height for shotput?
Release height > landing height
What is the optimal angle of release for a free throw?
Greater than 45 degrees
What is the relationship between release height and landing height for a free throw?
Release height < landing height
What is a parabolic flight path?
A symmetrical flight path
What is a distorted parabolic flight path?
An asymmetrical flight path
What are the 2 main forces that affect projectiles when they are in the air?
Weight and air resistance
When will an object have a parabolic flight path?
If air resistance is low and has little effect on the momentum of an object, the object will have a parabolic flight path
What objects have a small air resistance?
Objects with a large weight
When will an object have a distorted parabolic flight path?
If air resistance is high it will have a subsequent effect on the momentum of the object therefore it will have a distorted parabolic flight path
What is a sporting example of a parabolic flight path?
A shot put
What is a sporting example of a distorted parabolic flight path?
A shuttlecock in badminton
During the flight path of a shot put, what happens to positive vertical components?
Positive vertical components (ground reaction force) quickly turn into negative vertical components due to gravity
What happens to horizontal force during the flight path of a shot put?
Momentum stays the same throughout flight in all four areas - release point, highest point, opposite angle of release, point before contact
