Linear motion Flashcards
What is linear motion?
Linear motion is motion in a straight or curved line, with all body parts moving at the same distance at the same speed at the same time
What is mass?
The quantity of matter a body possesses
What is mass measured in?
Kilograms
What is weight?
The force on a given mass by gravity
What is the formula for weight?
Weight = Mass x gravity
What is distance?
The length of the path a body follows when moving from one position to another
What is displacement?
The length of a straight line joining the start and finish points
What is the distance of a 400m race?
400m
What is the displacement of a 400m race?
0m
What is speed?
The rate of change of position
What is the formula for speed?
Speed = distance/time
What units is speed measured in?
M/s
What is velocity?
The rate of change of displacement
- Velocity is speed with direction
What is the formula for velocity?
Velocity = displacement/time
What is acceleration?
The rate of increase in velocity
What are acceleration and deceleration?
The rate of change of velocity
What is deceleration?
The rate of decrease in velocity
What is a scalar quantity?
Scalar quantities only take into consideration magnitude (size)
What is a vector quantity?
Vector quantities take both magnitude and direction into consideration
What are the scalar quantities?
What are the vector quantities?
