Injury prevention Flashcards
What are the 5 types of injury prevention?
Screening, taping and bracing, warm up, flexibility training, and protective equipment
What is screening use for?
Used to identify risks in a performer
What kind of things can screening tell you?
Strength of muscles, muscle imbalance, flexibility and cardiac functioning
What is CRY?
Cardiac risk in the young
Why is screening a good technique to prevent injuries?
If potential weaknesses are found training programmes can be implemented to reduce this risk - strength and conditioning
What is a disadvantage of screening?
May lead to anxiety if a performer finds out they are susceptible to injury
………………
What are the 3 stages of a warm up?
Pulse raiser
Stretching exercises
Sport specific exercises
What is the pulse raiser stage of a warm up?
Cardiovascular exercise used to increase heart rate
What is the stretching exercises phase of a warm up?
Static stretching - no movement (held in a stationary position for 30 seconds)
Ballistic stretching - movement
Why are ballistic stretches important?
The stretch mimics the movement that the performer will be doing in their game
What is the sport specific exercise stage of a warm up?
Skills should be carried out that are specific to the activity
…………..
What is taping?
Involves taping a weak joint to add support and stability
What is bracing?
A much more substantial form of taping. Involves a hinged brace usually used on the knee or ankle
What are other factors to consider regarding injury prevention?
Diet/fluid intake
Correct application of SPORR
Ice baths
