Principles of training Flashcards
What are the principles of training used for?
To ensure that improvements are made to an athlete
What are the principles of training?
- Specificity
- Progression
- Overload
- Reversibility
- Recovery
What is specificity?
Training should be relevant to your chosen activity
What are the things that should be considered in specificity?
- Energy system used
- Muscle fibre type used
- Intensity and duration of sessions - should be similar to your training activity
- Skills and movements
What is progression?
Training adaptations should be gradual to prevent potential injuries
What is overload?
Overload is used to allow for progression to take place
What is the principle used for overload?
FITT
What does FITT stand for?
Frequency, intensity, time and type
What is frequency?
How often you train
What is intensity?
How hard you train
What is time?
How long you train for
What is type?
The type of training should be relevant to your activity
What is reversibility?
Also known as detraining
This is where improvements made are lost
If you stop training or become injured reversibility will take place
What is recovery?
Recovery time is vital to ensure that the body has time to replenish and repair
What ratio should be used for training and recovery?
3:1
