Angular momentum Flashcards
What is angular momentum?
Involves an object in motion around an axis
What are the 2 things angular momentum depends on?
Moment of inertia and angular velocity
What is moment of inertia?
The resistance of an object to a change in state when rotating
What is angular velocity?
The rate of movement in rotation
What is the formula for angular momentum?
Angular momentum = moment of inertia x angular velocity
What is the relationship between moment of inertia and angular velocity?
They are inversely proportional so will always have an affect on one another
- As one increases, the other one decreases at the same rate
What are the 2 things moment of inertia depends on?
The mass of the object and the distribution of the mass around the axis
How does moment of inertia depend on the distribution of the mass around the axis?
The closer the mass is to the axis of rotation, the easier it is to turn - so the moment of inertia is low
Whereas, the further the mass is to the axis of rotation, the harder it is to turn – so the moment of inertia is high
What will increasing the distance of the distribution of mass from the axis do?
It will increase the moment of inertia and decrease the angular velocity
Is angular momentum constant?
It remains constant unless an external force acts upon it
