What are the types of contraception? (10)
Abstinence, oral contraceptives, IUD, The Implant, Depo-Provera Injections, vaginal ring, emergency contraception, external condom, internal condom
Describe abstinence.
Choosing not to have sex. 100% STD and pregnancy free
Describe oral contraceptives.
Pills that send hormones to block LH surge/releasing an egg. Same time each day, no STD protection.
Describe IUD.
T-shaped plastic or metal is inserted into the uterus to block sperm. 3-12 years, no STD protection.
Describe Depo-Provera Injections.
Once every four months insert progesterone. No STD protection.
Describe the vaginal ring.
Releases hormones to prevent eggs from meeting sperm. 99% effective, no STD protection. 3-weeks use
Describe emergency contraception.
Prevents egg release + fertilization, for 24 hours, no STD prevention. ONLY for emergencies.
Describe the external condom.
Latex covers the penis to trap sperm without contacting the egg. STD protection, when used correctly
Describe the internal condom.
Liner put in the vagina, keeps sperm out of the uterus. STD protection, when used correctly.
Describe GIFT.
A catheter combines sperm and egg outside the uterus. The fertilized egg is injected back into the uterus. Increases chances of pregnancy.
Describe IUI.
Cleaned sperm is put into the uterus using speculum/ injection. Speeds up conception.
Describe adoption.
Legally taking someone’s child and raising them as your own.
Describe egg donation.
Someone donates eggs to someone else who wants to be a mother and for some reason can’t use their own eggs.
Describe hormone therapy.
The use of hormones to correct current hormones that prevent pregnancy in some way.
Describe surrogacy.
A woman carries and delivers a baby in place of the intended mother.
What is the first thing that happens in the conception process?
Seminal vesicles create the fluid that makes up semen.
What happens after the semen is made (during intercourse)?
The semen fluid is expelled into the ejaculatory duct (ejaculation).
What happens to the semen fluid after it’s in the ejaculatory duct?
The fluid mixes with sperm in the testicles.
What happens after the sperm and semen mix in the testicles?
Sperm is transported through vas deferens to penis.
What happens after the sperm is in the penis during intercourse?
Sperm enters the vagina.
What happens to the sperm after it enters the vagina?
It travels up the vaginal canal.
What happens to the sperm after it enters the vaginal canal?
Sperm and egg meet in outer portion of fallopian tube; become fertalized
What happens after the sperm fertilizes the egg?
The egg travels down the fallopian tube into the uterus.
What happens to the fertilized egg after it is in the uterus?
It attaches itself to the uterus lining and uses it for nourishment.
What happens after the fertilized egg is implanted in the uterus?
It grows into a full-term baby over 9 months.
What are the vas deferens?
Tubes that transport sperm to penis.
What is the bladder?
It holds urine.
What is the penis?
The male sex organ, inserted into the vagina during intercourse.
What is the urethra?
It connects the bladder to the penis.
What is the scrotum?
The sacs that house and protect testicles.
What are testicles?
They are organs where sperm is produced.
What is epididymis?
Piece on testicle where sperm can pass to vas deferens
What is the seminal vesicle?
Glands that make and store fluid that makes up semen, used in ejaculation to mix semen with sperm.
What is the vagina?
site where intercourse happens, birth canal
What is the cervix?
The passage from the vagina to the uterus.
What is the uterus?
Where the fertilized egg develops into a baby
What are the fallopian tubes?
Where egg goes after being released by ovary, fertilization happens here
What are ovaries?
The organ where the female sex cell is created. Size of almond
What is the fimbria?
Projections that guide eggs from ovaries to fallopian tubes.
Describe patch.
Consistently releases small amounts of hormone into the skin to prevent ovulation. Replace weekly, no STD protection.
