Apagar test, Neonatal Behavioral Assessment (on Brazelton scale)
What is the Apagar test?
the testing of the physical condition of the newborn, check survival probability
What is tested in the Apagar test?
heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle tone, reflex irritability, color
When is the Apagar test given?
1 minute and 5 minutes after birth
What are the average scores for the Apagar test?
1 minute = 6-7
5 minutes = 8-10
Why is the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment beneficial?
helps doctors spot problems in neurological, social, and behavioral aspects
What does the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment check for?
Interaction with environment - alertness, attention to sound, wanting to cuddle
Motor process - general activity level, reflex behavior
Control of physical state - self-quieting behaviors, levels of excitement/irritability
Response to stress - startle reaction, trembling
What other tests can be run on newborns?
blood tests, disorder tests, phenylketonuria, hypothyroidism, galactosemia, sickle cell

Phenylketonuria?
can cause mental disability without diet
Hypothyroidism?
thyroid deficiency, slow growth and brain devleopment

can’t turn sugar from milk into glucose

check for sickle cell anemia

What are some features of newborns?
round chest, stomach protrudes, legs drawn up and short compared to arms, almost no neck, broad/flat nose, tiny jaw/chin
What is cranium like?
(bones in head) fontanels - soft spots that close 1-2 years
What is skin like?
thin+dry/blotchy+ruddy/loose+wrinkly, rash after 1-2 days that disappears within a week
What are eyes like?
small, dull gray-blue, full color not until 6 months, no tears until 3 months
What is mouth like?
sucking pads on inside of cheeks, born with 0,1, or more teeth
Why is burping needed?
both with bottle and breast feeding, it gets rid of air from sucking/crying, halfway and after feeding
What causes diaper rashes?
constant use of plastic pants/diapers. Bacteria grows on the warm, moist, air-free skin.

it turns head and opens mouth

something is pressed against baby’s hand
hand tightens into fist
