Process of Forgetting and Remembering Flashcards
Forgetting
Inability to retrieve stored memories / information
Retrieval Failure
Inability to consciously recall information in the long-term store due to absence of retrieval cues (mental reminders we deliberately or implicitly create to assist in recollection later on)
Interference
Information in long-term store cannot be retrieved due to it being disrupted by similar information
Proactive Interference
Previously stored information interferes with new learning
Retroactive Interference
New learning interferes with recollection of previously stored information
Motivated Forgetting
Intentional or unintentional suppression of memories from conscious awareness to relieve emotional distress
Decay Theory
Memories fade over time
Rehearsal counteracts decay
Remembering
Ability to retrieve stored information
Recall
Retrieval of information from LTM without prompts or cues
Free Recall
Retrieval of as much info about a topic as possible in no set order
Serial Recall
Retrieval of info in a set order
Cued Recall
Provided retrieval cues help with recollection of memory
Recognition
Retrieval of correct info from list of alternatives
Relearning
Learning info again that has previously been learned
Shallow Processing
Encodes physical info based on:
- Appearance (Structural)
- Sound (Phonemic)
