Principles Of Homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
Set of processes where the body tries to maintain a constant internal environment
Regulation of the fluid surrounding cells (extracellular fluid)
What is the internal environment?
Fluid surrounding cells
What are the 2 major elements of the internal environments?
1) interstitial fluid (tf)
2) blood plasma
What is interstitial fluid?
Fluid leaving blood capillaries to bathe the cells, bringing oxygen and nutrients
Fluid returns to blood with wastes- carbon dioxide from cellular metabolism
What is blood plasma?
Fluid surrounding the blood cells
What makes up the feedback loop?
1) receptors
2) controller
3) effectors
What 2 systems control homeostatic mechanisms?
1) nervous system
2) endocrine system
What is negative feedback?
Response to a change in the internal environment
Automatic response
Involves corrective mechanism, reversing the original change and bringing the variable/factor within the internal environment back to normal
