Infection Flashcards
What is the chain of infection?
1) infectious microbe
2) reservoir
3) portal of exit
4) mode of transmission
5) portal of entry
6) susceptible host
What is the definition of communicable disease?
Diseases passing easily- contagious
Passes between hosts
What is the definition of non-communicable?
Not passed from person to person
Chronic diseases
CNS be acquired directly from environment or organisms already in body
What is an endemic?
Disease is present in a population over long period of time
What is an epidemic?
Sudden increase of disease (rapid spread)
What is a pandemic?
Worldwide epidemic
What does MRSA stand for?
Meticillin resistance Staphylococcus aureus
What are pathogens?
Agents that can cause disease
How does virulence affect the cause of disease?
Highly virulent agent- more likely to cause disease in host
What does normal flora mean?
Microorganisms that don’t usually cause harm and are usually present in a particular location
What does opportunistic disease mean?
Infection arising when the immune system is impaired and microorganisms which don’t normally cause disease may do so
What are the stages of disease progression?
1) microorganisms enter the human body
2) period of incubation
3) prodromal period
4) period of acme
5) period of decline
6) convalescence
