Autonomic NS Flashcards
What is the Peripheral NS divided into?
Somatic NS and Autonomic NS
What is the function of the Somatic NS?
Controls muscles under voluntary actions
Permits sensation
What is the function of autonomic NS?
Controls involuntary actions e.g. HR/BP/BR
System of motor neurones controlling cardiac muscle, smooth muscle lining blood vessels, endocrine secretions and internal organs
Process of homeostasis
What ANS divided into?
Sympathetic NS and parasympathetic NS
What is the function of the sympathetic NS?
‘Fight or flight’ response
Fast responses
What is the function of the parasympathetic NS?
‘Rest and digest’
Slow responses
What is the ‘fight or flight’ response?
Physiological response triggered when we feel frightened
Evolved- react appropriately
Give an antagonist pair
Sympathetic NS- increases activity of ANS
Parasympathetic NS- inhibits activity of ANS
