Being A Human Flashcards
What are the 7 characteristics of a living organism?
1) respiration
2) nutrition
3) reproduction
4) movement
5) excretion/elimination
6) growth and development
7) respond to stimuli
What is a cell?
The basic unit of life
Smallest component which can successfully perform the characteristics of life
What is Homeostasis?
The maintenance of a constant internal environment
Keeping the internal environment stable, ensuring conditions are right for cells to live and function
What is tissue fluid?
The fluid in which cells exist
Makes up the internal environment
What is cell specialisation?
Modification of the shape and form of the cell whilst it’s basic features (cytoplasm etc) remain unchanged
What is cell differentiation?
Gradual development of specialised structures and function for its particular role (gradual loss of ability to develop in other directions)
Organisation in the human body…
Molecule - organelle - cell - tissue - organ - organ system - organism
