Principles Flashcards
Principles of the biological level of analysis
Behavior can be inherited. Genetics plays an important role in our behavior.
Animal research may inform our understanding of human behavior.
Cognitions, emotions, and behaviors are products of the anatomy and physiology of our nervous and endocrine systems.
The environment and cognition can interact with biological systems and effect physiology. (Bidirectional model)
Principles of sociocultural level of analysis
Human beings are social animals and we have a basic need to “belong”. The relationship between the individual and the group is bidirectional.
Culture, defined as norms and values that define society, influences behavior.
In addition to our individual identities, humans have social identities defined by membership in groups.
People’s views of the world are resistant to change. Culture helps to shape those views.
Principles of the cognitive level of analysis
Mental representations guide behavior (schema theory)
Mental processes can be scientifically investigated.
Mental processes are influenced by biological systems and/or sociocultural factors.
Behavior change is explained as a result of cognitive processing.
