Primary dentition Flashcards
What is the main importance of primary dentition?
Same purpose as permanent dentition, as in mastication, but serves as TEMPORARY space holders for eruption of permanent teeth!
Is the size wider or smaller than permanent teeth?
Wider
Is crowding a problem in primary dentition?
Yes
What is the process of losing primary teeth called?
Exfoliation
When does exfoliation
7-12 years
Does exfoliation indicate a period at which root resorption of the deciduous tooth begins?
NO
How many years after the root is completely formed and the apical foramen is established that resorption begins at the apical extremity?
1 or 2 years
How many primary teeth do you have?
20 total, 10 each arch
How many incisors, canines and molars do you have in each jaw?
4 incisors, 2 canines, and 4 molars
List the primary teeth in terms of eruption times:
Central Incisor, Lateral Incisor, 1st Molar, Canine, Second Molar
When is primary dentition complete?
2.5
What replaces primary molars?
Permanent Premolars
Are premolars found in the primary dentition?
NO
The crowns of the primary maxillary first molars resemble the crowns of what?
Permanent Premolars
How many roots does the primary maxillary molars have?
Three
The deciduous mandibular first molar is unique in that it has a crown like what permanent tooth?
None
What system is used to indicate teeth of the primary dentition?
Using Universal Numbering System, teeth are identified as letters
True or False: The crowns of primary anterior teeth are wider mesiodistally in comparison with their crown length than are the permanent teeth
ture
True or False: The roots of the primary anterior teeth are broader and shorter comparatively to permanent dentitions
FALSE
Roots of primary anterior teeth are narrower and longer!
True or False: The roots of the primary molars accordingly are shorter and more broad and compact, than that of the permanent dentition.
FALSE
Roots of Primary Molars are LONGER and more SLENDER, and FLARE more, because it allows for room of the premolars to come in
True or False: The cervical ridges of enamel of the anterior teeth are more prominent in primary dentition
True
True or False: The crowns and roots of primary molars at their cervical portions are more broad mesiodistally
FALSE- they’re more slender at the cervix
True or False: The cervical ridges bucally on the primary molars are much more pronounced especially on the maxillary and mandibular first molars
True
True or False: The buccal and lingual surfaces of the primary molars are flatter above the cervical curvatures than those of the permanent molars, which narrows the occlusal surface
TRUE
True or False: Primary teeth are usually less pigmented and are whiter in appearance than permanent teeth
t
True or False: The enamel cap of primary molars is thicker and has a less consistent depth
FALSE; the enamel cap of primary molars is thinner and has a more consistent depth
Do primary molars have a greater thickness of dentin on the pulpal wall?
YES
Do primary molars have pulpal horns that sit higher than permanent molars?
YES
Does the primary central incisor contain mamelons?
NO
Is the crown of the primary central incisor greater mesiodistally than cervicoincisally?
YES- opposite is true of permanent central incisors
Does the primary lateral incisor have a smaller crown and more curved incisal edge?
YES
What has a greater length of the primary lateral incisor crown, cervicoincisal or mesiodistal?
Cervicoincisal
Does the primary canine resemble a central or lateral incisor more?
NEITHER- it has a specific function, thus doesn’t look like any other tooth
How is the cusp on the maxillary primary canine in comparison to that of the maxillary permanent canine?e
LONGER AND SHARPER
Does the maxillary primary canine have a cingulum?
YES
Where does the root taper on the primary maxillary canine?
Tapers lingually and inclined distally
What shape does the primary maxillary canine crown take from the incisal aspect?
DIAMOND
Does the mandibular central incisor have mameolons, or developmental grooves?
NO
Does the mandibular primary central incisor have a cingulum and marginal ridges?
YES
Does the mandibular primary lateral incisor have a slight distal tilt?
YES
What tooth is the mandibular primary lateral incisor more similar to?
Primary Central Incisor
What does the maxillary first molar look like?
A maxillary first premolar but with an oblique ridge!
Which tooth has larger measurements, the primary maxillary first molar or second molar?
Primary Maxillary Second Molar
Does the primary maxillary 1st molar have a cervical ridge?
YES- which is more pronounced on primary than permanent
What are the three teeth we have studied that contain an oblique ridge?
Permanent Maxillary 1st and 2nd molars, and primary maxillary 1st molar
Which primary tooth resembles a permanent maxillary first molar the most?
Primary maxillary second molar, but its way smaller
Does the primary maxillary second molar have a supplemental cusp too?
YES
Which tooth does not resemble any other tooth deciduous or permanent?
Primary Mandibular 1st Molar
On the occlusal surface of the primary mandibular first molar, which cusp is the largest and best developed of all the cusps, as it has a a broad, flattened surface lingually?
Mesiolingual Cusp
What tooth does the primary mandibular second molar resemble?
Permanent mandibular 1st molar
What tooth replaces the primary mandibular second molar?
Mandibular 2nd premolar
How many cusps from the lingual aspect of the primary mandibular 2nd molar can you see?
3
Which tooth has a lot of secondary anatomy?
Primary Mandibular 2nd Molar
True or False: The oblique ridge consists of the distal ridge of the mesiolingual cusp and the triangular ridge of the distofacial cusp
TRUE
What is an oblique ridge?
Transverse ridge that crosses the tooth obliquely
What makes up the triangular ridge on the mesiolingual cusp?
Cusp, Mesial Ridge, Distal Ridge to form the triangular ridge of the mesiolingual cusp
