Maxillary central incisors Flashcards
What is the main function of an incisor in general?
1) Cut Food
2) Articulate Speech
3) Support Lip and Maintain Appearance
4) Guide Mandible During Jaw Movements
5) Contain an incisal ridge/edge instead of cusps or occlusal surfaces!

What is an incisal ridge?
Incisal ridge makes up ALL of the incisal portion of the crown,
Note: newly erupted teeth have an incisal ridge- that has a round manner (connects facial and lingual surface and the mesio and disto-incisal angle)
Put the incisors to use, flat surface forms linguoincisally this forms an edge with labial surface.
Just really know that it was originally round (ridge) and with use, overtime it became straight (edge)
Incisal Edge
Formed by the junction of the linguoincisal surface and the labial surface!
Mamelon
More defined on newly erupted Maxillary Central Incisors!
*Still on lateral incisors, not as prominent
But, defined as scallops on incisal edge centered beneath the three facial lobes!
Peep the other features on the pic!
Developmental Depressions/Grooves/Lines
Two Shallow Vertical depressions that divide the labial surface into 3 portions!
Typically extend from the incisal edge to the middle 3rd on the labial/facial surface
Perikymata
Fine horizontal lines on the crown surface– typically in newly erupted teeth!
Dope nickname: Striae of Retzius
Common Traits to ALL Incisors
- Rectangular- Longer than wide!
-Taper from proximal regions to cervical - more convex distal surface than mesial
-mesioincisal angle is more square than distoincisal angle
-distal contact is more CERVICAL than mesial
-Roots taper towards the lingual and toward the apex - Roots are generally wider Faciolingually and Mesiodistally (except- symmetrical on maxillary central)
-Roots can bend towards distal
-Roots are longer than crowns!
Even more common trends– don’t get too caught up on these!
- crowns taper from proximal contact area to lingual/cervical- like said on last slide
- Mesial and Distal marginal ridges converge on the cingulum
-Cervical lines are looking like humps (arches to apex) on the facial and lingual side - CEJ curve toward the incisal, more prominent on mesial
- Facial and Lingual Heights of Countour/Crest of Curvature is in the cervical 3rd!
-S-Shaped lingual outline- viewed on the mesial and distal sides
-Facial is less convex than lingual from the incisal view- probably because the cingulum is thick and stands out more!
Maxillary Central Incisor #8 and #9
24- Mandibular Left Central Incisor
8 is Maxillary Right
9 is Maxillary Left
-Larger than the neighbor- lateral incisor
Mesial side of 8 contacts with the Mesial side of 9!
Only other teeth in the mouth that do this is Mesial side of #24 with Mesial side of #25
#25- Mandibular Right Central Incisors
Anamolies of Maxillary Centrals
-Longer Crown
-Shorter Root
