Primary and Secondary Data Flashcards
Primary Data
Its the data collected by the researcher to solve a specific research problem.
Secondary
Data that has already been collected by either the researcher, his or her organisation or an outside agency.
Primary data collection
The collection of primary data includes a number of accompanying activities associated with most of the descriptive and casual research designs.
Secondary data collection
Researchers should always begin with an in depth analysis of secondary data.
If a researchers information needs can be fully satisfied by secondary sources of information then there is no need to conduct further information.
Primary data (cost, time, relevance)
Since primary data has to be collected, obtaining the data can be expensive and a slow process.
This data is usually more relevant than secondary data.
Secondary data (cost, time, relevance)
Although secondary data is cheaper and faster to obtain, the researcher should always consider it’s relevance, accuracy, reliability and timeousness.
