Q

Should your knives be sharp or dull?

A

The sharper the knife, the better. It is far easier to cut yourself with a dull knife as it will take more force and less precision to cut.

A

This is a trick question. The safest knife to use depends on what you’re cutting. Make sure you use the correct knife for the task at hand.

Q

What do you do if you cut yourself?

A

Immediately stop what you’re doing and assess the situation. If you are bleeding badly and feel dizzy, call 911 or get someone else to call 911 while you apply pressure to the cut with a towel. If the cut isn’t too bad, apply pressure to the cut for about 15 minutes (or until you stop bleeding) and put on a bandage. Ensure that you wash any tools and discard any food that got blood on it.

Q

How should pots and pans be placed on a stove?

A

Pots and pans should always have their handles facing away from the front of the stove. If they are facing the front, it is easily accessible to children and very easy for someone walking by to run into it.

Q

How do you maintain your appliances?

A

Clean your oven and stove as often as possible, especially is there is visible residue on it from other meals. Built up food particles can easily ignite. Ensure that your appliances don’t have any frayed or worn cords as these can cause electrical fires.

Q

What do you do if there is a grease fire?

A

If oil or fat catches fire, DO NOT use water to put it out. The water will immediately evaporate on the hot oil causing it to expand and push the flaming oil out of the pot or pan. You want to starve the fire of oxygen by covering it. You can use another pot/pan or a wet towel. If that isn’t an option, pour A LOT of baking soda on it. If it cannot be contained, get everyone out of the house and call 911.
