Preventing Accidents Flashcards
How do you clean a knife?
Be careful when cleaning a knife. Use a dishwasher if you have one but if you have to wash the blade with your hands, use a towel or brush; don’t touch the blade with your hands.
How do you properly store knives?
Don’t leave them sitting around on the counter or in a drawer. Use a knife block.
Should your knives be sharp or dull?
The sharper the knife, the better. It is far easier to cut yourself with a dull knife as it will take more force and less precision to cut.
Which type of knife is the safest?
This is a trick question. The safest knife to use depends on what you’re cutting. Make sure you use the correct knife for the task at hand.
What do you do if you cut yourself?
Immediately stop what you’re doing and assess the situation. If you are bleeding badly and feel dizzy, call 911 or get someone else to call 911 while you apply pressure to the cut with a towel. If the cut isn’t too bad, apply pressure to the cut for about 15 minutes (or until you stop bleeding) and put on a bandage. Ensure that you wash any tools and discard any food that got blood on it.
How do you prevent a fire in the kitchen?
The most important thing is to be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to what you’re cooking.
How should pots and pans be placed on a stove?
Pots and pans should always have their handles facing away from the front of the stove. If they are facing the front, it is easily accessible to children and very easy for someone walking by to run into it.
How do you maintain your appliances?
Clean your oven and stove as often as possible, especially is there is visible residue on it from other meals. Built up food particles can easily ignite. Ensure that your appliances don’t have any frayed or worn cords as these can cause electrical fires.
What items should you use on a stove or in an oven?
Don’t use anything combustible and keep combustible items away from heat sources. Combustible items include but are not limited to wood, paper, cloth, plastic, etc…
What do you do if there is a fire?
If the fire is out of control, get everyone out of the house and call 911. If the fire is containable, use a fire extinguisher to out of the fire.
What do you do if there is a grease fire?
If oil or fat catches fire, DO NOT use water to put it out. The water will immediately evaporate on the hot oil causing it to expand and push the flaming oil out of the pot or pan. You want to starve the fire of oxygen by covering it. You can use another pot/pan or a wet towel. If that isn’t an option, pour A LOT of baking soda on it. If it cannot be contained, get everyone out of the house and call 911.
How do you prevent electrical shocks?
First, be aware of your surroundings and be cautious. Never use wet hands to unplug appliances, keep water away from electrical items and plugs and ensure any appliances you are unplugging are not in use.
