Prev Med 6.7 Flashcards
Define Vector
Any arthropod or rodent that is capable of transmitting disease to individuals that may effect the health of personnel
Host
individual potentially susceptible to illness
Define Reservoir
Organism where the agent can live and multiply
intermediate host
Define Pesticide
any substance or mixture that kills pest
What does a Navy Entomologist do?
On site consultation technical assistance recommendations Conducts training and certification evaluates pest items for shipboard use
What is the purpose of Vector control operations
preserve health and morale of personnel by preventing disease transmission Ensuring sanitary conditions eliminating host/resvoir disease Ensure safe food supply
What documents govern the DOD Pest management programs?
DOD Directive 4150.07 DOD pest Management program
OPNAVINST 6250.4c Pest Management programs
NAVMED P-5052-26 Shipboard Pest Management manual
What does the DOD Directive 4150.07 do
Provides basic standards for Navy pest control
Establish minimum level of pest control for DOD installations
What does the OPNAVINST 6250.4C Pest Management program do
Provide Navy and MC policy and procedure for pest control
Minimize pesticide use when non chem alternatives are available
What does the NAVMED P-5052-26 Shipboard pest management manual do?
Provide detailed guidelines for Navy shipboard pest management programs
Responsibility of Naval sea system command
Standardize pesticide and equipment recommended by BUMED for shipboard use
BUMED responsibility in pest management
monitor and evaluate shipboard pest management programs
Develop training for shipboard pest management
Commanding Officer responsibility for pest management
Ensure the SMDR is certified in shipboard pest management
Ensure only approved pesticides are used and stored onboard ship
SMDR Responsibility in pest management
Procure approved pest control supplies and equipment
conduct and supervise pest management operations
report pest info to higher authority
What is the Navy policy for pest managment
employ integrated pest management programs that minimize pesticide use the development and implementation of pest management solutions
What are the three Navy Pesticide standards?
Restricted
Non Restricted
Nonstandard Pesticide
What is restricted pesticides?
used by trained personnel and includes EPA restricted pesticides
What are non restricted pesticides?
available without control through supply systems
doesn’t require special training but only trained personnel can use on ship
What are non standards pesticides?
must be approved by the appropriate area entomologist before use
What does Acaricide control?
mites, scorpions, spiders and ticks
What are the categories of insecticides?
adulticide
larvicide
ovicide
Chlorinated hydrocarbons are not used by who?
the Navy
organophosphates are broken into what groups
Malathion
Dursban
Pesticides by mode of entry
Stomach poison- using ingestion
Contact poison- enters through body wall or respiratory
Fumigants- gaseous vapor through respiratory or body surfaces
Pesticides by modes of action
Desiccant cause death by dehydration
growth regulators controls growth and maturing stages
Pesticides by formulation
most need to made specially to a certain concentration normally done commercially Oil solution Emulsion dust Granules Suspension
What must be on a pesticide label?
Danger-Highly toxic skull and crossbones, antidote statement
Warning-Moderately toxic, no antidote statement
caution-No antidote statement, slightly toxic
No warning- comparatively free toxins
All pesticides must say what?
keep out of reach of children
Pesticide labels must also contain the statement?
it is violation of federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling
What PPE Is used with pesticides?
Respirators-Niosh approved
Eye pro-unvented or indirectly vented
Body protection-long sleeve clothes, change before going home and rubber apron if needed
Head Protection-Hard hat or wide brimmed hat to protect from drift
hand protection-non fabric lined gloves that protect wrist and are checked for leaks daily
ear protection- if needed for loud equipment
When must respirator filters be changed out?
8hr of use if pesticide odor is detected
changed every 4 hours during heavy spraying
S/Sx’s of Organophosphates irreversible Cholinesterase inhibition
Mild- Headache dizziness, weakness, anxiety, pupil constriction
Moderate-Abdominal cramps, slow pulse, muscle tremors, respiratory compromise
Severe- Pinpoint pupils, pulmonary edema, cyanosis, loss of sphincter control eventual death
Treatment of organophosphates
after cyanosis is overcome 2-4mg atropine sulfate IV
repeat doses every5-10 min until atropinization
maintain treatment for 24 hour or more
2Pam Chloride 1gm IV slow
S/Sx’s of carbonate poisoning
Pupil constriction, lassitude muscles, epigastric pain, tightness in chest
Treatment of Carbamate poisoning reversable Cholinterase inhibition
After Cyanosis 2-4mg Atropine IV
repeat 5-10min until atropinization
maintain treatment for 24 hr. or more
2PAM Chloride is contraindicated
S/sx’s of Organochlorine pesticide poisoning
CNS depressant/stimulant
20min-4hr may have headache, nausea Vomiting, apprehension coma, respiratory failure death
Treatment of Organochlorine pesticide poisoning
don’t induce vomiting
lavage stomach with 2-4lt of water
induce catharsis 30gm sodium sulphate in one cup of water
Administer barbitutes as needed for restless or convulsion
Calcium Gluconate 10% on 10ml ampules IV every 4 hours
minimum requirements of pesticide spill kit
absorbent material shovel leak proof barrel detergent or chlorine bleach (no bleach with Organochlorine) Appropriate PPE
How to clean a pesticide spill
confine pesticide confine with absorbent material diatomaceous earth, sand dirt shovel into bucket treat with cleaning agent use PPE
Two places to keep pest control records
sams/DMLLS
Separate pest control log
How to report pest control activities
DD1532-1 send monthly to NECE by email no correspondence, negative report encouraged
