Presentation/display of quantitative data Flashcards
Why do we use graphical techniques?
They are sued to summarise data in a clear and visually accessible way
What do tables do?
Summarise the key descriptive statistics for a data set
What do scattergrams show?
The correlation between two sets of data by plotting points to represent each pair of scores
What does a positive/ negative/ zero correlation show on scattergrams?
Positive- upward trend, when one increases so does the other
Negative- downward trend, when one increases the other decreases
Zero- no distinct relationship, random scatter of results
What do bar charts show?
They display nominal data (categories) and are used to compare conditions.
What should you remember when drawing a bar chart?
There are gaps between the bars as the categories are not continuous
What do histograms show?
Ordinal or interval data- always continuous data. They show data within conditions.
What should you remember when drawing a histogram?
The bars have NO GAPS because it is continuous data (unlike bar chart)
What does a line graph show?
It displays ordinal or interval data because it’s continuous. Shows data within conditions and allows for 2 or more sets of data to be shown on one graph.
What should you remember when drawing a line graph?
The plots of data should be connected by a line (unlike scattergrams)
