Experimental designs Flashcards
What are the 3 experimental designs?
Independent groups, repeated measures, matched pairs
What is experimental design?
How the testing of participants is arranged in relation to different conditions
What are independent groups?
Two or more SEPARATE groups of participants that take part in different conditions
Independent groups evaluation:
STRENGTH- No order effects (getting bored) as they only take part in one condition. Reduces demand characteristics.
WEAKNESS- More p’s needed to recruit so time and money consuming. Participant variables and individual differences with different p’s.
What is repeated measures?
Only ONE group of participants. They take part in both or all conditions.
Repeated measures evaluation:
STRENGTH- Fewer participants needed, less chance of participant variables as same p’s are used.
WEAKNESS- higher chance of demand characteristics and order effects (getting bored) as they take part in all conditions
What is matched pairs?
Two separate groups of P’s who are matched due to certain characteristics or qualities eg IQ, age, culture. One p from each pair takes part in only 1 condition
Matched pairs evaluation:
STRENGTH- less chance of participant variables as they have been paired to be similar, less chance of order effects
WEAKNESS- more p’s needed so more money and time needed. Time consuming to match p’s.
