Content/ thematic analysis and coding Flashcards
What is content analysis?
A type of observational technique which involves studying people indirectly through qualitative data.
Taking qualitative data and turning it into quantitative data.
How is content analysis put into practice?
Coding
When is content analysis particularly helpful?
when conducting research that would otherwise be considered unethical. Any data that has already been released into the public domain is available for analysis, such as newspaper articles, meaning that explicit consent is not required.
What does coding involve?
Involves the researcher developing categories for the data to be classified. These categories provide a framework to convert the qualitative material into quantitative data, which can then be used for further (statistical) analysis.
What are the coding procedure steps?
- Data is collected
- Read through and examine data to become familiar
- Identify coding units
- The data is analysed by applying the coding units
- A tally is made of the number of times that a coding unit appears
What is thematic analysis?
Thematic analysis is a technique that helps identify themes throughout qualitative data.
A theme is an idea or notion, and can be explicit or implicit.
Thematic analysis will produce further qualitative data, but will be more refined.
Content analysis and thematic analysis AO3
- Can produce subjective findings. The researcher may interpret things in an interview due to their personal preconceptions, judgements or biases.
- Ecological validity- most of this research is based from conclusions off of real life behaviour
