Q

What must follow apprendre

A

When an infinitive follows apprendre, the preposition à must precede it.

  • J’apprends à conduire. (I am learning (how) to drive.)
  • Les élèves apprennent à lire. (The pupils are learning to read.)

In the following example, apprendre à means to teach. The person be- ing taught becomes the indirect object.

*Jacquie apprend à son frère à faire du ski. (Jacquie is teaching her brother how to ski)
