What is the difference between partir, sortir, and quitter

A

•Partir is either used alone or followed by a preposition, usually de/d’ (from) or pour (for; in the direction of)

  • Quand pars-tu? (When are you leaving?)
  • Dominique part de (pour) Paris. (Dominique is leaving from (for) Paris)

•Sortir can also mean to leave. It is used either alone or with a preposition, to describe leaving (going out of) an enclosed space, such as a room or a building.
•Sortie also means to go out for the evening (with a friend or friends)
*La maîtresse sort quand la cloche sonne (The teacher goes out when the bell rings)
*Les élèves sortent aussi de la salle (The pupils also leave the classroom)

•The -er verb quitter always requires a direct object, either a place or a person

  • Nous quittons New York en mai (We are leaving New york in May
  • Elle quitte ses amis à midi (She is leaving her friends at noon)
