Preliminary homicide Investigations

Question 1

Homicide and MP unit SHALL

Answer 1

1. LEAD the investigation of all HOMICIDES that occur within the city of Toronto
2. LEAD the investigation of all criminal acts which result in serious bodily harm or life threatening injury to a police officer while on duty
3. LEAD the investigation of deaths in police custody that are not related to the discharge of a FA
4. SUPPORT field officers with the investigation of suspicious deaths
5. PROVIDE INVESTIGATIVE SUPPORT to the coroner in the investigations of deaths in police custody

Question 2

OIC upon being notified of a suspicious death or possible homicide SHALL

Answer 2

1. ENSURE divisional Det attend scene
2. ENSURE Hom and FIS are notified
3. Of death of a child under 16, ENSURE CYAC is notified
4. Seek assistance of other divisions to provide response to calls for service, if required
5. NOTIFY UC if on duty, OIC - TPOC
6. ENSURE all officers assigned to homicide have completed notes amd 466
   Scanned and attached memo book notes prior to ROD
7. ENSURE applicable eReports are completed and forwarded to the Coroners Office prior to Post Mortem. (Appendix B if homicide of an infant)

Homicide investigation means an investigation led by Homicide into the circumstances surrounding the death where there is:

1. Obvious or Suspected Foul Play
2. Found Human Remains
3. Cause of death cannot be determined
4. Any other suspicious circumstance
